Romantic Hotel Muottas Muragl, Samedan

Starting situation and idea

The historic Alpine structure built in 1907 is located 2’456 m above MSL in Upper Engadin. It includes one restaurant with an attached hotel as well as a mountain station of the Muottas Muragl funicular railway. In the 60s and 80s, the building was extended and modified several times.

Approach

The frame of the building is defined by the redefined stone plinth and a new structure. Power supply to the building is drawn from renewable sources: heat from the hotel/railway, solar collectors, geothermal heat and photovoltaic energy. The project has won several awards.

Challenges

Development and design, restructuring and redefining the corporate identity. The nine-month construction period and the logistics of building without an access road at an altitude of 2’456m above MSL was a major challenge to construction management.

«In several iterations, we thought about how the building built in 1907 with historically evolved structures and temporary additions could be adapted to our times. Fanzun showed the courage and conviction to rise to the challenge. The result is a hotel and two restaurants, which have found a market, function smoothly and generate their own power. We then started to win awards right away and that was what exceeded all expectations. Hats off to this masterpiece.»
