Olympic venue for Peking 2022

Whilst the world eagerly watches the latest Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, Fanzun along with three other Swiss companies is already planning for the next Winter Games in Peking in 2022. In an ideas competition held by the Olympic Organising Committee for the venue for the Nordic disciplines, the project team convinced with a lot of symbolism and innovative spirit.

In the tender process, numerous visionary ideas from all over the world competed against one another for selection by the Olympic Committee. Five teams from five countries were nominated for the ideas competition with prequalification. The Swiss project team, comprising Generis AG in the role of lead partner, Fanzun AG as the lead developer, concept designer and planner, Küchel Architects as the designing architects and BG Consulting as the traffic, safety and costs planner made a lasting impression on the Committee with their idea.

The ring

An Olympic ring is used as a model for the functional building which could soon be used by cross-country skiers and biathletes. In combination with the ski jump that has been designed according to the flap of a bird’s wing, the facility makes reference to the „Bird’s Nest“ in Peking in which the opening ceremony for the 2008 Games took place.

Usage after the Olympics

As with all Fanzun projects, sustainability plays an important role. „The ring“ has thus also been designed for usage after the Olympic Games. It is to establish itself as an experience-oriented sports centre and contribute to the revival of the region.

For us and our partners, the competition was a unique experience. Individual ideas from the competition project will be pursued further by the Olympic Committee in the implementation phase. We would like to thank all involved for the good collaboration and are waiting with anticipation to see in what form our ideas will be implemented in the final venue.
