Bodmer Senior Citizens’ Care Centre, Chur

Starting situation and idea

The Senior Citizens’ Care Centre located at the fringe of Chur’s medieval city was built in the 60s and needed to be replaced by a new structure between the existing high-rise and the chapel. Designers for the project were selected by a competition.

Approach

Together with the existing high-rise and the chapel, the replaced structure defines the new Bodmerplatz. The ground floor has a cafeteria, kitchen and offices while the four upper floors have one section each with 21 beds. The rooms are arranged around a central sitting area which offers an excellent view into the courtyard.

Challenges

A project design competition was held based on a study drawn up by Fanzun. The challenge was to design the new building in such a way that only minimum provisional arrangements were made in day-to-day operation. When finally completed, the building was to accommodate 84 persons, a cafeteria and administrative offices.
