Senior Citizens’ Centre Pfauen, Bad Zurzach

Starting situation and idea

The Pfauen senior citizens’ centre was to be replaced by a new senior citizens’ and care centre on the central Höfli municipal site located between the historic city centre and the modern thermal baths. A selective project competition was held for a mixed use structure which was completed in November 2014.

Approach

The 2-round competition served to find a solution to the clearly defined requirements as well as to evaluate and find the right project partner. The competition judged architectural as well as economic aspects. Estimates were created for all cost components in order to arrive at the solution that best addressed the commercial/economic requirements.

Challenges

The framework conditions were defined in collaboration with the cantonal conservation agency and the Emil-Burkhardt Foundation so that all operational, economic and conservation-related requirements were satisfied and the structure fit into the overall image of the town. An international competition was then conducted in accordance with GATT/WTO rules.
