Living in the village centre, Scharans

Initial Situation & Concept

The private client lives across from the plot for the building project in the village centre of Scharans. The village centre is of national significance and is accordingly subject to townscape protection. Fanzun is commissioned with the overall planning of a multi-family building that is to offer rental apartments as well as living space for the client and his family.

Approach

The new building is divided into two volumes with a connecting staircase in between, picking up the grain of the village structure. It houses seven apartments as well as eight garage spaces integrated into the building volume. The timber façade, with its ornamentation, recalls the previous barn and also references the old lime tree on the nearby church square.

Challenge

The existing barn on the plot – a building typical of the local vernacular – cannot be upgraded to meet the desired room programme. The new building must fit harmoniously into the established village structure in terms of its volume and positioning, while also meeting current comfort requirements.
