At the end of February, the District Court of Zurich at Wengistrasse 30 in Zurich’s District 4 was handed over to the client, and today the official inauguration took place. This marks the successful completion of a demanding construction project in a dense urban setting.
In a joint venture with Fiechter & Salzmann Architekten Fanzun held overall project management – and was additionally responsible for cost planning, construction management and site supervision. The client was the Baudirektion Kanton Zürich, Hochbauamt.
Originally built as a dairy between 1979 and 1981, the building was never designed for its later function as a courthouse: there was no barrier-free entrance, hardly any daylight on the ground floor, and only three courtrooms. The comprehensive refurbishment addressed these fundamental issues: the reinforced-concrete frame structure was stripped back to the shell and completely reorganised. Twelve courtrooms are now arranged around a two-storey, light-filled court hall. An additional staircase core consistently separates public circulation from the internal routes used by court staff.
The new façade, made of reddish fibre-reinforced concrete elements, takes its cue from the vertical articulation of the historic neighbouring buildings and forms a design link to the adjacent district court building. The rhythmic arrangement of windows between projecting concrete pilaster strips gives the building a lively structure. In terms of energy, the project relies on a groundwater heat pump and roof-integrated solar modules.
