Avrona Guesthouse, Tarasp

Starting situation and idea

The Gasthaus Avrona in Tarasp, a historic hamlet, has been owned by Helen and Peter Witmer since 2006. With a view to sustainable tourist use, Fanzun developed a concept that brings the quality of the historically grown building fabric back into focus, while also optimising operations.

Approach

The parking problem is solved by a carriage house, hidden within the slope. The old carriage house and stable are being sensitively repurposed according to the «house within a house» principle. Operational organisation is being optimised, and an additional lounge and dining area offers an optimal connection to the outdoor space. Despite thermal renovation, the quality of the historic fabric is preserved.

Challenges

The carriage house and stable had to be activated for tourist use without compromising the charm of the historic hamlet. In addition, an underground car park for vehicles had to be created that integrates sensitively into the landscape. Operational processes needed to be optimised, and the picturesque location had to be taken into account in the design of the outdoor spaces.
