«Quadrin» prototype modular system

Starting situation and idea

Development of a modular building system for temporary structures in timber construction, intended for use at major events and sporting events. The buildings are assembled on site from the main components: floor/ceiling, column and wall. The components are transported and stored in standard high-sea containers, by road or by rail.

Approach

The Quadrin buildings stand out for their lightweight appearance. Because the load-bearing structure and the façade are separate, transparent, translucent or opaque façade elements can be installed as required. Outer layers set in front of the structure can be used as terraces, balconies and advertising surfaces, and also serve as assembly platforms for two-storey modules.

Challenges

The greatest challenge lay in achieving a wide variety of building configurations with as few elements as possible, while optimising the elements for fast assembly and disassembly on site. The planning was carried out in close collaboration with the timber construction company Uffer and the timber engineers Makiol Wiederkehr.
