Repairs to the Celerina junction

Starting situation and idea

After years of planning, in 2014 the municipality of Celerina decided to retain the existing junction with the cantonal road and not to proceed with the roundabout option. This meant that several structural engineering works had to be repaired. Fanzun AG was able to plan and oversee several refurbishment projects over a three-year period.

Approach

By using high-pressure water jetting to remove damaged concrete and carrying out appropriate reprofiling, the structures could be restored not only visually but also durably. At the same time, this made it possible to carry out structurally necessary reinforcements in certain areas.

Challenges

During the works, a total of two frame bridges, one pedestrian underpass, one retaining-wall bridge, two bridge piers and four stream culverts were refurbished over a period of three years. This work generally had to be carried out under live traffic at all times. A carefully planned staging of the works was therefore essential.
