On Monday, 13 October 2025, the renovated and extended government building on Grabenstrasse in Chur was officially handed over to the Cantonal Court. As construction manager, Fanzun AG accompanied this significant project on behalf of Aebi & Vincent Architekten – a project that secures a valuable piece of Grisons building culture for the future.
The venerable government building, dating from 1878, now has a contemporary purpose as the new seat of the Grisons Cantonal Court. At the end of 2021, Aebi & Vincent Architekten, together with Fanzun, won first place in the planner selection process. The population of Graubünden approved the project with a clear majority on 27 November 2022. Following intensive construction work since March 2023, an impressive ensemble now stands that combines historical heritage with modern requirements in exemplary fashion. The official inauguration will follow on 19 November 2025.
A key challenge was restoring the former cantonal parliament hall with its eight historic art-glass windows and two chandeliers. After decades in storage at the Rhaetian Museum and the Haldenstein cultural protection facility respectively, they are now returning to their original location. Fitted with modern LED technology, the historic chandeliers combine over 100 years of craftsmanship with contemporary lighting technology. At the same time, the modern extension was built to Minergie standard. As construction manager, we ensured the necessary overview on this demanding project.
The sustainable building uses district heating and photovoltaics on the new building. It now provides 69 office workstations, two courtrooms, judges‘ chambers, a library and a cafeteria – an important contribution to the Canton of Graubünden’s Justice Reform 3.
A project that shows: listed historic building fabric, modern judicial requirements and ecological responsibility can be successfully combined. More about the project.
