The Dolder Grand
Extension 2014, Zurich

Starting situation and idea

Following the re-opening of the Dolder Grand in 2008, Fanzun was appointed client representative for the “East” extension of the hotel. The focus of the extension were MICE facilities, luxury apartments as well as integration of the Dolder Railway into the hotel. A key requirement was not to disturb the superb view from the new hotel.

Approach

Terrace construction was convincing as this appears like a garden from outside. Involving key staff from the Dolder Grand project (though not under the same employers) served as the basis for successful implementation. An addition project control level was introduced in order to coordinate the interface between construction and hotel operation.

Challenges

A major extension such as this to a running hotel required great flexibility from all involved parties to ensure that disruptions to operations were minimal. Seamless architectural integration, connecting operational logistics to reduce emissions and shortest possible construction time were top objectives.

«The Dolder Grand has been receiving sophisticated clientele from all over the world since 1899. When the hotel was renovated and extended, we wanted to retain its tradition and at the same time lead the hotel into the present. The task needed to be handled by someone with experience and sensitivity. With Fanzun acting as the client’s representative, we were kept up-to-date about the project and very well advised at all times. When the Dolder Grand was reopened in 2008, it received several awards and was elevated into the ranks of the best hotels in the world.»
