Signalbahn valley station, St. Moritz

Starting situation and idea

The new valley station for Engadin St. Moritz Mountains AG is the first step in converting the entire Signal site area from a parking and works yard use into a new multifunctional gateway for St. Moritz. In the future, retailers, shops, hotels and resorts will come together alongside the valley station to form a hybrid overall complex.

Approach

The use of prefabricated concrete elements and intelligent site logistics made it possible to limit the operational shutdown to a single summer season. The seriality of prefabricated construction is used to develop an architectural language that does justice to the representative demands of the new gateway to St. Moritz, while shaping the complex programme into a coherent whole.

Challenges

To enable the future development of the site, the valley station had to be part of the overarching overall concept. In addition, complex infrastructure facilities (a de-icing/water treatment plant and main transformers) had to be integrated. Operation of the mountain railway could only be interrupted for one summer season, requiring an extremely fast construction process.
