Roundabout design for Sommerau-Rossbodenstrasse, Chur

Starting situation and idea

The construction of the new Chur Süd motorway junction required land to be ceded from the plot owned by Emil Frey AG. A new roundabout in front of the garage is intended to improve traffic flow towards the motorway. In connection with the land cession, a sponsorship arrangement for the new roundabout was agreed between the City of Chur and Emil Frey AG.

Approach

The design of the roundabout pays tribute to Rossbodenstrasse as Chur’s «car mile». Historic and contemporary vehicles from Emil Frey AG’s portfolio have been abstracted into silhouette form. The characteristic appearance of the weathered Corten steel creates a natural accent and establishes a connection between technology and nature.

Challenges

The design is based on the City of Chur’s regulations governing the design of inner roundabouts by third parties. Within the framework of certain traffic-related requirements, the planners had free rein in designing the roundabout. In accordance with road traffic legislation, the sponsor’s advertising had to be kept discreet, so as not to distract traffic.
