Residential Buildings Alte KEB, Chur

Starting situation and idea

For more than 40 years the ice skating rink on Calandastrasse was a location for ice hockey and ice skating in Chur. After lying idle for nearly 10 years, the defunct site was to be converted into buildings with attractive urban residential units near the city centre, railway station, shopping facilities as well as schools and kindergartens.

Approach

5 independent buildings with 13 apartments each, one horizontal building with 12 apartments and community facilities, an underground car park, a green courtyard as well as a tree lined square offer spaces for different living styles and target groups. The collaboration with three architects’ teams is a continuous source of new ideas and solutions.

Challenges

Architects were selected for defining the building projects by inviting them to submit studies based on an approved neighbourhood plan. Projects were awarded to several architects to avoid monotony and create attractive and diverse offerings. The project resulted in adjustments to the neighbourhood plan.
