South Wing, Zurich Main Station

Starting situation and idea

The nearly 150-year-old, historically protected south wing of Zurich’s main train station is set to undergo a comprehensive renovation in phases by 2023. To carry out this challenging construction project, Fanzun was commissioned to manage the construction.

Approach

Through a comprehensive business continuity management plan, all interventions were scheduled in advance and measures were defined to ensure that operations could continue without disruption at all times. The safe management and control of pedestrian traffic can be ensured through a clearly defined schedule for the phased expansion of the construction perimeter. The project was honored with the prestigious Monocle Design Award in 2024.

Challenges

One of the biggest challenges in planning and implementation is ensuring the uninterrupted operation of all existing technical and infrastructural structures. Complex construction site logistics and limited access routes are additional key factors in the project. All of this must be done while constantly taking into account the heavy commuter traffic in and around the main train station.
