Shopping Centre Wiesental, Chur

Background & Idea

The shopping centre, built in the early 1970s, is in need of renovation and no longer meets current regulatory requirements. Besides increasing the retail area from 7,200 m2 to 9,150 m2, the renewal aims for an inviting and unified appearance.

Approach

The additional retail area is planned through a single-storey extension made of steel and an expansion in the basement of the existing building. The ribbon-like façade and the canopy connect the existing building with the extension, giving it a unified and high-quality appearance.

Challenge

As a basis for the planning, the original building was stripped of the later, heterogeneous extensions. The subsequent installation of mechanical smoke extraction in the existing structure could be elegantly solved by making use of decommissioned shafts. The planning had to be conceived in stages from the outset, to allow for a conversion while the centre remained in operation.
