Hossmann Stables, Champfèr

Starting situation and idea

The equestrian sports facility currently located in the village centre of Champfèr has to relocate, as it must make way for a residential development. The facility is the only horse boarding stable with a riding hall in the Oberengadin. The new equestrian facility, designed according to the latest standards in animal husbandry, includes a caretaker’s apartment and, as a special feature, a veterinary practice.

Approach

The north-south orientation of the equestrian facility does not obstruct the view of the Engadin lake landscape. The horse boxes and paddocks attached to the west and east sides of the riding hall receive sunlight throughout the year. The translucent polycarbonate façade of the riding hall provides good lighting conditions and warming southern sunlight in winter.

Challenges

After an extensive site evaluation, a further major hurdle had to be overcome: having the suitable site included in the regional structure plan. The zone specifically created for equestrian sports is additionally overlaid by the S3 groundwater protection zone and the BLN (Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments) Engadin lake landscape.
