Fire station and maintenance depot, Kilchberg

Starting situation and idea

The fire station of the Kilchberg-Rüschlikon special-purpose association and the municipal works yard of the municipality of Kilchberg are located on an attractive plot at Alte Landstrasse 166 in Kilchberg. The existing buildings date back to the 1960s, are now in urgent need of renovation, and no longer meet current requirements. Following a competition, the joint venture of architecture firm Fiechter & Salzmann and Fanzun won the commission.

Approach

Several stages are required to maintain ongoing operations at all times. Through four construction phases, operational processes can be ensured throughout. The new basement structures are being built within a short time, with a slope adapted to the site conditions, to allow the additional rooms to be used promptly. For the new extension, prefabricated elements are planned in order to meet the ambitious construction schedule.

Challenges

Operations at the works yard and the fire station must be maintained throughout the entire construction period and must not be disrupted. In addition, parts of the new buildings are being constructed within a protected park containing trees worth preserving. Furthermore, some of the existing buildings are in very poor condition, which needs to be assessed before construction begins.
