HCD Training Hall, Davos

Starting situation and idea

As part of the overall renovation of the Vaillant Arena, the HCD (Hockey Club Davos) needs a new training hall. This is to be built on the site of the existing outdoor training rink, whose ice surface will be preserved. For this reason, an invited competition was held in spring 2017, which Fanzun AG succeeded in winning.

Approach

In keeping with the Vaillant Arena, the training hall is given a timber structure with a polycarbonate outer skin. The hall is characterised by a layered sequence of spaces: grandstand, ice hockey rink, and finally a promenade hall as a generous gesture towards the ice surface. Together with the sports centre, this creates a compelling architectural conclusion to the event space, with the Vaillant Arena serving as the connecting link.

Challenges

The core task was to develop a highly economical and functional overall solution for the hall. At the same time, a convincing urban design response had to be found for this prominent location, in the immediate vicinity of the Vaillant Arena and the ice rink’s event space.
