Commercial Centre Porta Samedan

Initial Situation & Concept

The Cho d’Punt site, located at the gateway to the industrial district and largely undeveloped, is currently used for a petrol station with a shop/bistro and a car wash. Thanks to its clear layout and good accessibility, the focus has been on public use of the site from the very beginning. The new building is intended to create the Engadin’s first shopping centre around a large retailer.

Approach

Everything – from the petrol station to the row of shop windows to the delivery area – is combined in a single building. A clear layout guides road users so that they reach their respective areas of use protected from the weather and without major detours. The façade, with its striking pattern, is intended to recall the region’s traditional sgraffito, integrating perfectly into the Engadin, which can proudly look back on an exceptional architectural history.

Challenge

The building’s various planned uses all had to be combined under one roof. Nevertheless, safe traffic routing for pedestrians, cars and trucks had to be ensured on the tightly sized forecourt.
