Tschuggen Coaster, Arosa

Starting situation and idea

What does a «Leading Hotel of the World» do to stand out from around 450 equally distinguished properties worldwide, with a mountain landscape right on its doorstep? It develops a world first, giving guests direct and exclusive access to the nearby ski and hiking area.

Approach

All classic solutions known up to that point, such as cable cars, cog railways, inclined lifts and the like, were unable to meet the requirements. By combining existing technology from the amusement park industry, structural engineering expertise, a sense of luxury and negotiating skill, a world-first solution meeting all requirements was developed and realised as a prototype. The alignment lets the route disappear behind natural terrain features, so that it cannot be seen from Innerarosa. The volumes of the mountain and valley stations are kept to a minimum, with the technical equipment housed in basement levels.

Challenges

The project’s framework conditions required integration into the undulating terrain, as well as the most unobtrusive possible integration into the landscape when viewed from a distance. In particular, the mountain and valley stations were not to stand out excessively. In addition, passage underneath the roughly 600-metre-long track had to be ensured along its entire length, for tourism and agricultural use in both winter and summer. These conflicting framework conditions had to be met through a holistic approach.
