Bodmer Bridge, Chur

On behalf of the City of Chur, the existing Bodmer Bridge, which connects the old town with the Bodmer neighbourhood, is being replaced. The tight schedule and spatial constraints, together with the requirements of the RhB (Rhaetian Railway), create complex framework conditions for the design and execution of the new slab bridge.

Starting situation and idea

The bridge, dating from 1963, only just met the requirements of the applicable building codes. In recent years, the structure had been significantly affected by environmental influences. The bridge superstructure was to be rebuilt and widened to a usable width of 8.50 m in total. Loads were determined in accordance with current standards.

Approach

The installation platform beneath the existing bridge served both for demolition and as falsework for constructing the new bridge. Micropiles were used to reinforce the right-bank abutment. To minimise deformations and increase slenderness, the bridge was prestressed in the longitudinal direction.

Challenges

The limited installation area and heavy traffic in the urban environment only allowed for partial demolition of the right-bank abutment. It was important to keep disruption to RhB rail operations to a minimum. Existing and future utility lines were integrated into the two recesses beneath the bridge. The new bridge can carry higher loads and has larger bridge dimensions.
