Apartment building Centro Storico, Poschiavo

Starting situation and idea

Fanzun was commissioned by a private client to design an apartment building in the heart of Poschiavo town. The brief was to situate the building in a walled garden compound amidst a historic ensemble of buildings. The topmost floor would be used by the client.

Approach

The building has the classic three-part format featuring typical elements and proportions of the Borgo region in a contemporary design idiom. This resulted in a convincing synthesis of the old and the new. The new building earned distinguished mention in the Gute Bauten 2013 Graubünden (Fine Buildings 2013 Graubünden) competition.

Challenges

The principal task was to create contemporary living spaces for five apartments with 3.5 to 5.5 rooms offering a high degree of comfort as well as sustainability and yet subtly integrate the new building into the town’s impressive historic surroundings.
