Opera Mater Christi Senior Citizens‘ Home, Grono

The home has been in operation since 1949 and was inadequate to meet present-day requirements. The advisory council of the foundation appointed Fanzun AG to perform a feasibility study, conduct an architecture competition and represent the client’s interests to realise a new, attractive and cost-optimised senior citizens’ residence and nursing home.

Starting situation and idea

Opera Mater Christi is situated at the northern village end ahead of a thickly-wooded southern slope. Located close to the village, the site is located to receive sunlight and offers a nice view. Exploiting the potential offered by the location for the well-being of the residents was a central concern in project development as well as at implementation time.

Approach

The four-storeyed semi-circular “Casa di Cura” is an ensemble of buildings standing on a common exterior area. The fan-like alignment shortens distances for service tasks and at the same time, makes optimum use of the available area. Both factors increase project viability.

Challenges

The rooms were to be optimised for easy operation and were to facing the village so that residents could look upon familiar sights. Staying within the tight budget for a successful competitive project was a big challenge to all involved parties.
