Ciäsa Alba, Maloja

Starting situation and idea

In the Creista neighbourhood in Maloja, the municipality of Bregaglia approved a neighbourhood development plan in 2009 for the construction of eight single-family houses and one multi-family house. Parking is provided via an underground car park, built by the municipality below ground.

Approach

With a building envelope of only 10.00 m x 7.20 m, the footprint is relatively small. However, the neighbourhood development plan allows this small footprint to be compensated for with four storeys above ground. The layout of each floor plan had to be designed so as to minimise circulation space as much as possible.

Challenges

The architecture, with its rustic natural stone façade, reflects the building culture of the Bregaglia valley while also incorporating larch elements that pick up on the building culture of the Engadin. The various uses, such as living areas and parents’/children’s bedrooms, were distributed across the individual floors.
