Energy system for
Muottas Muragl, Samedan

Starting situation and idea

In the context of renovating and extending the historic 100+ year-old Alpine hotel in Muottas Muragl, ways and means were sought to provide sustainable and CO2-neutral energy for the building. The task involved exploring various power generation sources such as wind energy, biomass, solar and photovoltaic energy.

Approach

The funicular railway ascends a vertical height of 700 m to 2‘456 m above sea level. Photovoltaic panels were installed along the topmost track section. Due to local geographic conditions, the location is ideally suited to generate photovoltaic power. The annual energy yield is 50% higher than in comparable installations at lower levels.

Challenges

The installation site along the railway track is challenging due to wind and snow conditions as well as safety requirements of the railway but it offered an opportunity to realise a sufficiently large solar array in a landscape-compatible manner beyond the snowline.
