Villa on Lake Zurich

Starting situation and idea

Renowned architect Otto Glaus built the exposed concrete building on the banks of Lake Zurich in the early 70s. The task was to increase the living areas in two parts of the building and adapt them to contemporary standards of comfortable living.

The idea was to incorporate the extensions in the basement so as to be invisible from the outside. Light for the additional rooms are provided by large atriums. The newly created courtyard an also be used as an outdoor living area. This gave rise to a sequence of dramatic as well as intimate spaces.

Interventions to the protected heritage site had to be subtle so that the expressive architectural idiom was conserved. This requirement needed to be concurrently paired with the client’s need for more living area.
